Sorry about having to use the crowned hand old Northern Ireland flag. There is absolutely nothing else symbolising Northern Ireland anywhere on wikipedia. As Maggie Thatcher would say - the Union Jack: That is out. The Tricolour: That is out. The flag of the province of Ulster: That is out. Why couldn't the peace process come up with a new cross community flag? FearÉIREANN 01:03, 16 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- I must say personally I think it should use the Union flag, that is after all the only official flag to represent Northern Ireland. As Northern Irish myself I like the old red hand flag, but as it is no longer official and hence I think it should be removed. The Union flag is the only alternative. I've put in an image of Northern Ireland from a map. Because it is so small the writing on it can't be seen so we won't have that pain-in-the-ass problem of each side's own versions of different places' names. And it gets around the problem of their being no neutral flag for Northern Ireland that one side or the other won't throw a tantrum over. They managed to get neutral non-sectarian symbols for the Assembly and the police. When the hell are they going to get their act together and work on neutral symbols for Northern Ireland as an entity, or are we going to have to put up with each side throwing tantrums when their symbols aren't given priority and the other side's supposedly have been for ever? No wonder people both in the UK and in the Republic are so fed with the whole friggin' lot of them sometimes. FearÉIREANN\(caint) 06:02, 5 November 2005 (UTC)
- I couldn't care less about either sides symbols to be honest, the Union flag is the only flag that can be used for Northern Ireland plain and simple. As for a divided society, you should try living up there to see just how many people care about the division you'll find it's a minority on both sides for the most part, the majority of the population just want to get on with their lives. At the end of the day Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, plain and simple, legally, technically and for any other reason that really matters wether people like it or not, it's as much part of the UK as Israel is it's own country or the United States government owns the US and not the native Americans. - Also possibly the most deciding factor is the fact that this article is about the State buildings in Northern Ireland and therefore it needs to show the flag of the state, not what some public opinion would like. Ben W Bell 08:15, 5 November 2005 (UTC)
