- 1835 – The Ludwigs-Eisenbahn starts the first regular passenger service between Nuremberg and Fürth using a steam locomotive.
- 1842 – George Whale, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London and North Western Railway 1903–1909, is born (d. 1910).
- 1906 – The Southern Pacific Railroad and Union Pacific Railroad jointly form the Pacific Fruit Express Company (PFE) refrigerator car line.
- 2005 – QJ 7081 (pictured) pulls the world's last regularly scheduled passenger train behind a steam locomotive on a mainline railroad when it pulls a train between Daban and Chabuga, China.
