I tried to find information on the naming of pages about rivers and other geographic formations, but based on Naming conventions, there doesn't seem to be any policy about it. Some of the other rivers near Charleston, South Carolina have page titles including the name of the state, which seems to be common practice for US cities. I rather like that method because I think it cuts down on confusion and potential confusion. Should this page be retitled Cooper River (South Carolina)? Since I am not a member of the community (nor do I wish to join), I cannot move the page myself and am not certain that would be a decision I could make anyway.
Errors?
[edit]I'm hardly the one to fix them, but there are a couple of things I see wrong...
For one, I'm not one to really keep up with local events, but as far as I know, there's only one bridge left traversing the river. At least, I see no signs of the old bridges anymore. Perhaps it's possible that the portions over land are still there, but looking out over the river, I see only the Ravenel bridge. (I should note here that my apartment has a view of the Cooper River)
Second, calling Mount Pleasant a "major city" is a bit of a stretch. I'll let whoever wrote this get away with calling Charleston one, if only because it's "major" by South Carolina standards, but Mount Pleasant isn't even a city, much less a major one. (At least, the signs on 17 and Coleman Blvd. still say "Town of Mount Pleasant"...)
Third, I've heard absolutely no one call the Ravenel bridge the "New Cooper Bridge." I never heard anyone say "Old Cooper Bridge" or even "Cooper Bridge" either. I have, however, heard "Cooper RIVER Bridge" (with both "old" and "new" placed it front of it, with the adjectives confusingly referring to different ones at different times).
Finally, just a note. It's pronounced "Coopa" with the "oo" like in "book," not like in "boom." The Charleston accent can be... interesting.
- I removed mention of Mt. Pleasant. It isn't a city - it is a town. I also removed the link to drum island - is it necessary? It is a dredge mound created when they dug the submarine trench to the Naval Weapons Station. Nobody lives on it. As for calling the Ravenel "New", many people refer to it as the "new bridge" because it is the new one. The two old ones are almost completely gone (there still one section hovering out there). --Kainaw (talk) 21:50, 5 December 2006 (UTC)
