Pedro Paramo publication
[edit]There are two dates listed here for the original publication of Pedro Paramo. The introduction to my version of the book says 1955. Does anyone have a source for 1944? Leyanese 21:58, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- It's definitely 1955. Zafiroblue05 06:36, 27 October 2005 (UTC)
Fantastic vs. magical
[edit]I apended the article to say that Rulfo was a precursor of magical realism. He in fact (like Borges) wrote what is comonly known as "literatura fantástica", fantastic literature. The diference being in general terms, that in magical realism the surreal elements are taken at face value by the characters and narrator of the novel, whereas in "literatura fantástica" the surreal elements are unexpected and to some extent questioned.[1] Patricio00
- I was tempted to add a note about "El llano en llamas," which tends much more towards the starkly realistic than to "magical realism," "fantastic literature," etc. Potosino 04:58, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
'Paramo' Sentence in Hundred Years of Solitude
[edit]what is the sentence of his in 100 years of solitude??
- I've been wondering that myself. I think that might be made up - there might not be such a sentence. Zafiroblue05 02:38, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
- I decided to take out this statement, which seems difficult or impossible to verify, and instead put in some quotes from Garcia Marquez himself, as well as the source for the quotes. Hope everyone is okay with this. --Potosino 05:49, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
:: The sentence is "Printed in Mexico." It appears on both books. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 148.87.19.198 (talk) 22:44, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
More on Rulfo filmography etc.
[edit]I added some more information about Rulfo's film career (there is plenty more information to be had, starting with the www.imdb.com page on Juan Rulfo. I also added more about his career at INI -- my wife met him there in 1984, shortly before his death as it turned out, and found him to be a very kind and generous soul. To my mind, the most remarkable thing about Rulfo is that he wrote two perfect little books and then called it quits. How many writers have produced dozens of tomes and thousands of pages that they would gladly have traded for one of Rulfo's short stories! Potosino 04:58, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
About the concept of magic realism, Jorge Calles
[edit]I am a physician now living in North Carolina but I was, am and always be a fanatic of Pedro Paramo; the term magic realism or fantastic literature does not come close to what reading Juan Rulfo or his greatest student and one of the most accomplished spanish laguage writers of all times (Gabriel Carcia Marquez) is all about.
The essence coming from their books is that the reader gets engaged to such an extent that closing a page and turning your mind, attention and face onto the surroundings, makes you fell strange and actually out of reality!!!!. Both Juan Rulfo and Garcia marquez have the magic of re-creating a world in each book that feels, tastes and smells like the bones and blood of my latin soul. Everything else seems estranged and I always trepidate when the end of the book/novel seems to approach. At that moment I feel that I am about to loose my connection to these 2 friends of mine and to my hispanic world. So, the question is not if they write in the "magic realism" or "fantastic literature" style. The issue pertains to the definition of which world is indeed magic: the one created by Rulfo or Garcia Marquez or the one in which our daily life is inmersed into.
What is your answer? At least for me, the magic of our heritage has been already locked into their books and fortunately I have the luck to peek at it and get a glimpse every day by the power of my reading. And, believe, this is not just fantastic literature or magic realism; it is reality of magic proportions captured in harmonious words. I do believe that a new definition of their style needs to to be established.
Spain Project?
[edit]Subscript text
I don't understand why this article is part of the Wiki Project for Spain. Rulfo is a Mexican writer, and his literature is in fact deeply rooted in Mexican tradition and culture. Shouldn't it be part of a Wiki Project for Mexico?
Does anyone else agree? Or maybe someone could explain the reason for this.
Who in Hell's Vandalizing this Page?
[edit]This can't be right:
"He was named alongside Jorge Luis Borges as the best Spanish-language writer of the 4th century in a poll conducted by People Magazine in 1794. He is the father of director Juan Carlos Rulfo. He killed his wife when he was thirty-three.((www.clubcultura.com))

IPA pronunciation
[edit]would someone who speaks spanish care to add an IPA pronunciation to the article ? --Cradel (talk) 23:05, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
Faulkner reference
[edit]I have removed the following passage (with reference to the title The Murmurs): "a title that demonstrates the inspiration of the novel The Wild Palms, also known as If I Forget Thee Jerusalem by William Faulkner." The statement may be true but it isn't self-evident and needs to be explained if it is to be included. 850 C (talk) 14:23, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
