A request

Hi Ekem, I got your name from the list of participants at WikiProject Medicine, as someone with an MD who specializes in gynaecology. I'm wondering whether you'd be willing to look at an article.

I've submitted Female genital mutilation for featured-article status. The nomination page is at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Female genital mutilation/archive1.

I've approached it as a human-rights issue, rather than as a detailed medical article, and I'd like to keep it that way—a relatively short (4,000 words) general overview—so that it's as accessible as possible. However, a concern was raised on the FAC talk page (here) that the health consequences section may not be up-to-date or detailed enough. I think it is, but it would be very helpful if a qualified person could cast an eye over it to make sure there is nothing false or too simplistic, and no key issues missing.

Whether this is just an informal glance, or whether you leave a review on the FAC page itself—either of those would be extremely helpful. February 6 is the UN's International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation, so I was thinking it would be good to nominate it for the main page on that day, but it has to be a featured article to make it eligible.

Hi again, Ekem, thank you for all the work you did on this. As there were two objections to the nomination, one informal on the talk page, and one formal on the nomination page, I've withdrawn the nomination for now. I don't know whether I will want to renominate it. What I would like to avoid is medicializing it to the point where most readers would have difficulty understanding it, because I see it primarily as a major human rights issue where a broad appeal is important. I don't know whether I'd be able to manage that (in terms of the writing style, and the sources used), and still overcome the objections that were raised. However, if you want to continue to work on it—in whatever direction you choose to take it—that would be absolutely fine, and indeed very helpful.

Inequality edit

That the use of tax havens contribute to inequality is not stated directly in the article, except as a quote of someone. You're right the usage of tax havens contributes to smaller revenue collected by the government, but I don't see the direct support of the connection to inequality in the article. Hoffman modulation contrast

Hello Ekem, some years ago you uploaded File:Oocyte.jpg. The license tag says you are the creator. Now, the article Hoffman modulation contrast uses this images as an example for this technique. This may be correct but I am wondering about it since the file legend does not list the technique with which it was recorded. Could you confirm that this image was made with HMC? Cryolipolysis

I noticed that you were a major contributor to the Cryolipolysis article in 2010.

I routinely bring articles up to GA on behalf of the article-subject in a COI capacity and am working on a draft Coolsculpting page. However, I am uncertain as to whether I am actually creating a "new" page, or if this is the same subject. Many sources seem to use Coolsculpting and Cryolipolysis synonymously and when you first contributed to Cryolipolysis the commercial product-aspect of it was not yet significant. The supplier Zeltiq had not gone public yet and the product had not become very popular until the following year (2011).

I was wondering if you had any thoughts on if we should have one page for Zeltiq, Coolsculpting, and Cryolipolysis or if there should be a couple pages, etc. CorporateM (Talk) 14:51, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

My suggestion is to keep coolsculpting and cryolipolysis on the same page. As I see it we are talking about the same thing, cryolipolysis the generic and technical term, and coolsculpting a (forgive me) "cooler" term more for advertising and promotion of cryolipolysis for cosmetic affects. "Coolsculpting" or "CoolScupting" also appears to be a trademark term, see here [1]. Zeltiq Aesthetics appropriately has its own page in WP, so equipment can be discussed there. World's first laparoscopic appendectomy - David

Dear Ekem

I hope you don't mind me adding a section to your talk page.

The issue to be brought to you attention concerns the world's first laparoscopic appendectomy.

You mentioned that Dr. Kurt Semm a German performed the procedure in 1980.

I have it on good authority that the procedure was actually performed by Dr. Atef Gabrael an Australian in 1976 in the state of New South Wales at Minchinbury Hospital.

Dr. Niynatt Khan, a gynecologist and obstetrician was doing a laproscopic procedure for what was thought to be an ovarian cyst. Discovered during the procedure that it was appendicitis and approached Dr. Gabrael who completed procedure (laparoscopic appendectomy).

What are you thoughts and considerations on the matter?

"Good authority" will not fly in Wikipedia. It needs to be substantiated with a reputable reference. Further, did Dr. G. do more of :these? Did he show to others that the laparoscopic approach is viable?

Sorry for the idiom "good authority." I've actually spoken with Dr. Gabrael and he still practices medicine. I'm not sure if it was documented. There might be hospital records but I don't know if I would be able to access them.

I may be able to approach Dr. Khan, he may still be alive and living in New South Wales.

Would some of these be sufficient, for instance if I could obtain hospital records or first hand accounts in writing.

Hello David,

From the point of Wikipedia or any encyclopedia the event is hearsay unless documented and published. If it happened, it would still be publishable today. For this the hospital records would be very important as well as interviews with preferably both, Drs. Khan and Gabrael. If you can do this and publish it, great, - otherwise get in touch with a medical historian (many universities have a department or section dealing with medical history). If the records still exist, they can be reviewed. I hope this is possible before the trail of history disappears. Ekem (talk) 12:42, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
