Stub removal/cleanup

Criteria for destubbing - to destub the article most of the following should be present:

1. Article is 250 words plus.

2. Article is correctly categorised

note also Naming conventions (city names) to refer to Australian place naming convention

3. Article mentions which local government area it falls within and/or nearby towns/highways, longitude and latitude ::Latitude and Longitude coordinates can be obtained from: Geoscience Australia Example of use in Hawker, Australian Capital Territory article: (postcode: 2614, 35°15′S 149°02′E) - type (postcode: 2614, {{coor dm|35|15|S|149|02|E|region:AU-ACT}})

4. Article describes basic stats, like population at census 1996 or 2001

Population statistics (can be found from the Bureau of Statistics Office). Tip: The ABS website is a very hard to navigate - so to find the right document, search google for POA2234 (replace "2234" with the right postcode for your suburb). Then you can either download the data for AUS$10, or the ABS site will let you download it for free if the computer you are using is in a University or a library.

using this Australian Bureau of Statistics page you can navigate to free statistical local area information. For example, snapshot of Red Hill enables suburb demographic comparison with Canberra figures.

5. Article mentions historical information and/or activities in the town now that make it interesting.

Too many stubs!

There are, I reckon, currently 2000 stubs in this category. Shouldn't the stubs in this category be reclassified into, say, Sydney stubs, Melbourne stubs, etc? Alex.tan 23:02, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I am inclined to agree with you that the number of stubs is so large as to be almost unmanageable, however, discussion on the Australian Wikipedians' noticeboard thought that the large number was manageable. State based stubs would be better. It would help editors find local stubs quickly rather than sorting through the current maze. -- Longhair | Talk 10:35, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I've added the {{verylarge}} template to this category to let others know of the problem. I still quite like the idea of state based stubs, for example vic-geo-stub, sa-geo-stub, nt-geo-stub and so on, assuming any new stubs don't clash with existing ones. -- Longhair | Talk 12:04, 26 July 2005 (UTC)

Those states currently with over 150 stubs (viz., VIC, NSW, QLD and WA) will have separate stub templates within the next few days. This should cut the number of stubs in the category by about 70%. Note however that - as per stub naming guidelines, they will not have the names Longhair has suggested. Grutness...wha? 08:05, 22 September 2005 (UTC)
