Relative sea level change
[edit]Wikipedia text "When the term "relative" is used, it connotes change that is not attributed to any specific cause" reflects a misconception I believe. --Wetman 02:50, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- I suspect that statement is following the pattern of the other definitions here. They all look like terms which may precede "sea level change". I think the author of that sentence was referring to "relative sea level change" meaning merely that a measurement showed a change but the cause of the change has not been identified. I suggest you separate that definition in its own paragraph and explain it. -- SEWilco 05:01, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- A note about "scare quotes": In the phrase "When the term "relative" is used..." "relative" is not being enclosed in "scare quotes," as public Junior High teachers call them. The quotes apply to the fact that the term is being referred to as a word rather than in its signicance. No need to delete the "scare quotes," when you are repeating the words of another, either. --Wetman 06:29, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah, awkward meaning. I was replacing quotations around defined words with Wiki emphasis (bold), following the suggested style for definition of terms. But that's all look and no substance. -- SEWilco 07:59, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Merge with sea level rise?
[edit]If this gets beyond a dicdef it will surely duplicate (at least part of) sea level rise. What should the relationship between the two articles be? Should eustasy just be merged? Rd232 6 July 2005 22:40 (UTC)
- Here's an idea. This "Eustasy" is a back-formation from eustatic sea level as opposed to isostatic sea level...The whole subject needs a center. I think the article Sea level expresses the central idea in its title and that it should be enlarged to make a big trunk article, discussing, at least briefly, all the permutations of "sea level" That article already has a subsection "Sea level changes through time'. Sea level rise and Sea level fall belong together at "Sea level change", with a concise version at Sea level, under a Main article at... header. Let's start forming concise versions of each of these articles and just stick them together following some sensible sequence, in a central "trunk" article. --Wetman 6 July 2005 23:29 (UTC)
