Pronunciation
[edit]Norse pronunciation ['y.mir]. Guides give ['i.mir] (ee'-meer) as a variant, as English does not have [y]. However, English phonotactics do not allow the second syllable to have a long vowel, so this is still not fully assimilated into English. A fully assimilated pronunciation would be ee'-mur, homophonous with "emir" for those of us who stress that word on the first syllable. --kwami 06:06, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- /y/ has become /i/ in Icelandic, which is often used as a guide to pronouncing Old Norse names. ˈɪmɪr kwami 04:02, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
