- 1884 – Brooks Locomotive Works completes its 1,000th new steam locomotive (example pictured).
- 1890 – Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway (the "Big Four Railroad") gains control of the Peoria and Eastern Railway in southern Illinois.[1]
- 1960 – Canadian Pacific Railway operates its last steam locomotive powered train in regular service as freight train number 76, led by 4-6-2 number 1262, arrives in Montreal.[2]
- 2002 – 383 people die in the Al Ayyat train disaster when a gas cylinder for a stove on a passenger train travelling between Cairo and Luxor, Egypt, explodes and sets 7 of the train's 11 passenger cars on fire.
